Karen Walasek finished her BA while attending the MFA writing program at Goddard College in Vermont, a unique and progressive school that requires creation of one’s own curriculum. Karen used her entire life as a classroom to achieve her degree. This alternative experience is the foundation of Walasek’s volatile work. She writes poetry to stuff meaning into the gaps between novel and screenwriting, though the intensity of her voice betrays the true passionate place it holds in her life.
Her workshops on character development and science fiction have been ecstatically received throughout the United States and Canada. Her current favorite workshop topic, "How to Write Love letters", encourages men and women to put their love down on paper.
Karen’s freelance essays and poetry have been published in Alternative and Women’s newspapers, writer’s newsletters, journals and anthologies.
A mother of three, Walasek home-schooled her now adult children because she believes “the life of the individual is dependent upon freedom in a safe space”. Direct experiences with midwifery, and eclectic interests such as her spiritual communication with animals and love of travel provide the wellspring for her work.
Walasek started painting in the spring of 1999, and considers it a nurturing source of freshness for both the model and the artist.
